I'd love to share stories. Can tell you about Irv Tressler and Anne Foote in Munich, for example! Ha ha!
Cheers, Mark Foote

Re: The Strange Case of Irving Dart Tressler

Growing up, my father called Tressler's book "The family Bible." He would sit at the dining room table, with us all gathered around, and read it out loud to us, with tears streaming down his face from laughng so hard. Many years have passed, and my father passed away years ago. In adulthood I have taken a Dale Carnigie course, but I still find that "How to Loose Friends..." has served me just as well, if not better than the Carnigie course! Thank you Mr. Tressler!

Re: The Strange Case of Irving Dart Tressler

What's with all the product endorsement in the last chapter?

Re: The Strange Case of Irving Dart Tressler

Ben,
I hope that this note finds you. I ran across your Uncle's book in an antique store. My family finds it extremely hilarious. Your Uncle wrote in such a witty fashion. I am sorry to hear about his declining health and death; I would have liked to read more of what his brain conjured up on print.

Susan

Re: The Strange Case of Irving Dart Tressler

Mr.
Olson, I would love to meet you someday.

I knew Annie, (Kendal,
Tressler) Foote from Mendocino before she died. I have several of
her silk screen paintings.

Irv was a wonderful man and
she told me all about his suicide.

Ironically, the drugs that
would fully control the epilepsy that he suffered from were common
within about a year of his death. She told me that the common belief
in those days was that epilepsy was a mental disorder. Everybody
kept telling him that he was mentally ill.

At one point we had nearly
all of Irv's books. I didn't like How to Lose Friends and Alienate
People nearly as much as With Malice Toward All. Sitting around a
table at her house in Mendocino with a glass of wine in hand Annie
laughed when I asked her which was it, a green and yellow basket or a
blue and yellow basket. For those of you reading this post who have
no idea what I am talking about go find the book and read it.

I have no idea if you will
see this post as it is has been 3 years since you commented on this
page. His writings, though usually humourous, were not always negative and include a number of other books and regular features in Scribner's Magazine.

Re: The Strange Case of Irving Dart Tressler

What a great post! I am proud to say that Carnegie has had a major impact on my life and I find myself picking "How it Win Friends.." up ever couple of years and being shocked and dismayed how easy it is for me to forget so many of the great lessons it contains.

Thanks for taking the time to track all that info down!

Re: The Strange Case of Irving Dart Tressler

Pretty silly guy. I'm a Dale Carnegie graduate too; the first set of principles are all about becoming sincerely more interested in the interests and concerns of others. Seems like he's just saying "No."
